Before you leave
Plan the trip together, at your kitchen table
Route 66 is 2,448 miles through 8 states. Planning it used to mean weeks of guidebooks, websites and phone calls. Now you just ask, and you get a plan you can change as many times as you like.
We have 12 days and don't want to drive more than 3 hours a day. Plan it for us.
A day-by-day plan with the towns and the miles.Which historic motels are comfortable but not too expensive?
Motels and hotels from the guide, on three budgets. We only have one week. Which half of the road should we do?
An honest answer on what fits, and what you'd miss.
See how it works
You ask a question. It answers like a friend.
No forms, no menus, no tiny buttons. You type your question, or tap the microphone on your phone's keyboard and say it, and the answer appears in large, clear writing.
Here's the kind of plan it gives you, with the actual driving miles between towns.
We'd like 3 easy days from Amarillo to Albuquerque, with short drives. Where do we stop each night?
Here's a relaxed plan on the old road:
- Day 1Amarillo to Tucumcari116 milesStop at the Route 66 Midpoint in Adrian
- Day 2Tucumcari to Santa Rosa60 milesA short day, with time for the Blue Hole
- Day 3Santa Rosa to Albuquerque121 milesArrive on Central Avenue, the old Route 66

On the road
Never wonder where to stop
On Route 66 the old road comes and goes, diners close for the season, and towns are far apart. Your Travel Buddy rides along in your pocket and answers from wherever you are.
We're in Gallup and we're tired. Where can we stay tonight?
Places to sleep near you, from the guide. Is there a good diner in the next hour of driving?
The roadside stops worth pulling over for. What's the price of gas in Kingman today?
For today's questions it checks online, and tells you so.

In the evening
Plan tomorrow from the motel, in five minutes
After dinner, sit outside the room and ask what's worth seeing tomorrow, how long the drive is, and where to have lunch. You'll set off in the morning knowing exactly where you're going.
It's also the best moment to use it: some desert stretches have weak phone signal, so a plan made on the motel Wi-Fi stays with you on the screen.
What it knows
It knows the places that make Route 66 special
Your Travel Buddy is built on Route 66, The Definitive Field Manual, our guide checked on the road in April 2026: 2,448 miles, 8 states, 169 maps and 105 GPS waypoints, with 9 restaurants and 9 hotels in every state. The neon motels, the classic diners, the old gas stations, and the story behind each one.

Honest answers
It won't make things up
Ordinary chatbots search the whole internet, and they can send you to a diner that closed years ago. Your Travel Buddy answers from our Field Manual first.
When you ask about today, like the weather, a road closure or the price of gas, it looks online and begins its answer with “From the web”. And if it can't find a reliable answer, it simply tells you so.

Questions
Your questions, answered
What is the Route 66 Travel Buddy?
It's an AI travel assistant that knows Route 66 from end to end. You ask a question in plain English, on your phone or your computer, and it answers in seconds, like a friend in the passenger seat who has read every page of our Route 66 Field Manual.
I'm not good with technology. Will I manage?
If you can send a text message, you can use your Travel Buddy. You type a question, or tap the microphone on your phone's keyboard and say it out loud, and the answer appears on the screen. There are no menus to learn and nothing to set up.
Do I need to download an app or remember a password?
No app and no password. It opens in the internet browser of your phone, tablet or computer. To log in, you type your email address and we send you a short code to enter.
Where do the answers come from?
From Route 66, The Definitive Field Manual, our guide checked on the road in April 2026: 2,448 miles, 8 states, and 9 restaurants and 9 hotels per state on three budgets. For questions about today, like gas prices, weather or a road closure, it looks online and starts the answer with “From the web”, so you always know the difference.
What if it doesn't know the answer?
It tells you so. It is built to say “I couldn't find reliable information” rather than guess or invent a place that doesn't exist.
Does it work without phone signal?
No, it needs an internet connection. Signal is weak on some stretches of the Mojave Desert and western Arizona, so many travelers plan the next day in the evening, on the motel Wi-Fi.
I already own the Field Manual. Do I need to buy it?
No. The Travel Buddy is included with the Field Manual. Log in at app.route66operator.com.
